EELA Kenya convenes its 4th Project Steering Committee
23 March 2026, Nairobi - EELA Kenya convened its 4th Project Steering Committee (PSC) Meeting, gathering representatives from government, industry, research institutions and development partners. The meeting provided an opportunity to review the progress achieved during the second year of implementation and reaffirm stakeholders’ continued support for the project.
Updates were shared across key areas including:
- Progress across project outcomes, such as policy support, the upcoming launch of the Industrial Clean Technology Platform (ICTP), and ongoing capacity-building initiatives
- Strengthened collaboration with national institutions, notably KIRDI, to reinforce local capacity and technology deployment
- Recent milestones, including an Energy Management Systems (EnMS) training delivered to industry stakeholders earlier this month, and continued development of digital tools and studies to support the sector
A key highlight was the presentation by WWF of findings from a baseline assessment of energy use in Kenya’s tea sector. The study highlighted the energy‑intensive nature of tea processing, continued reliance on fuelwood, and significant variations in efficiency across factories, revealing clear opportunities for improvement.
PSC members contributed insights during discussions focused on practical aspects of implementation, including improving efficiency across factories, addressing challenges related to alternative fuels such as briquettes and pellets, and strengthening energy monitoring through more standardized and digital approaches. Members also emphasized the importance of closely engaging with national institutions, including KIRDI, to support technology development and deployment.
The meeting reaffirmed the importance of continued collaboration among stakeholders to sustain progress and advance energy efficiency efforts within Kenya’s industrial sector.
